Climate and energy

Energy and Climate Impact

A natural part of Viscaria’s work is to contribute to society’s transition to fossil-free energy and reduce global climate impact. In this transition, copper plays a crucial role. Viscaria aims to create energy-efficient processes in its mining production, with the goal of using only electricity from fossil-free sources. We can achieve this goal by making conscious technical choices for vehicles and future transportation methods during project planning and mine design. We also intend to set strict requirements for the electricity purchased. The vehicles currently used by Viscaria in project planning are powered by HVO diesel, which contains at least 21 percent renewable fuel and can reach over 50 percent. In production, the ambition is to use electrified vehicles where possible and, in other cases, use alternative fossil-free fuels.

Viscaria reports emissions focusing on scopes 1 and 2 according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol). Scope 1 includes direct emissions from operations in the form of fuel consumption from company-owned vehicles. Scope 2 includes indirect emissions from electricity, heat, cooling, and steam. Currently, we do not report on scope 3, which includes emissions in the value chain both upstream and downstream.

Energy Production Considering Biodiversity

Our ambition is to set specific requirements for origin labeling and consideration of biodiversity when purchasing electricity. In doing so, we contribute to increasing demand for this type of electricity, with the goal of also raising awareness of how biodiversity can be impacted by electricity production.
